A troubleshooting hub, not a review site

Who this is for

pitandsear is for the person standing in front of a cooker that is misbehaving. The burgers are welded to the grate, the gas grill will not pass 300°F, there is rust on the bars that was not there in October. You do not want a buyer's guide. You want to know what is happening and whether you can fix it this afternoon.

Every page on this site starts from a symptom written the way a person actually describes it, then works through the causes in order of how often each one turns out to be responsible. Each cause comes with a check you can perform yourself and a fix written in specifics — temperatures, times, tool names — rather than instructions to "clean it thoroughly".

What we do

We research manufacturer service documentation, published fire-safety guidance from bodies including the NFPA and the Consumer Product Safety Commission, food-safety guidance from USDA FSIS, and university extension publications. Every fix page and every maintenance guide links out to the sources it draws on so you can read the original rather than take our word for it.

We also try to be honest about the economics. Roughly half the causes documented on this site resolve with no purchase at all, and the pages say so before they mention any product. A site that answers "buy a new one" to every question is not troubleshooting, it is advertising.

What we do not do

We do not run a test kitchen and we do not publish first-hand product testing. When a product page describes a thermometer's read speed or a cover's fabric weight, that figure comes from the manufacturer's own specification, and the editorial work is in explaining which specifications matter for a given job and which are marketing. Where a claim would require laboratory measurement to verify, we do not make it.

We do not publish prices or star ratings, because both go stale within days and neither helps you decide anything. We do not give medical advice, and the only health guidance here is standard food-safety temperature guidance sourced directly from USDA FSIS.
